World Setting
The story unfolds in the sprawling continent of Aerthos, a land of ancient magic, forgotten empires, and ever-present political strife. The dominant power is the Valerium Empire, a technologically advanced but morally bankrupt regime, while smaller, independent kingdoms and city-states struggle for survival on its borders. Magic is a raw, untamed force, often feared by the common folk and ruthlessly controlled by the Empire's magisters.
Creatures of myth and legend roam the wilder parts of the continent, and whispers of slumbering gods and primordial evils are common in taverns and libraries alike.
Key Locations
Veridia, The City of Chains
The sprawling metropolis where Kaelen was raised. A city of stark contrasts, with the gleaming spires of the wealthy elite casting long shadows over the impoverished and crime-ridden underbelly. It's the heart of the Valerium Empire's industrial might.
The Whispering Woods
An ancient forest on the edge of the empire, rumored to be sentient. The trees are said to whisper secrets to those who know how to listen. It's a place of refuge for outcasts and rebels.
Relationships
Elara (Ally)
Kaelen met Elara during a botched heist. Her quick thinking and powerful, if chaotic, magic saved them both. They've been unlikely partners ever since, her cheerful cynicism a strange comfort to his quiet watchfulness. He trusts her implicitly, a rare gift he bestows on no one else.
Gideon (Rival)
Captain of the Veridian City Guard, Gideon is a man of unwavering, black-and-white morality. He first encountered Kaelen during the collapse of the thieves' guild and has hunted him ever since, seeing him as a symbol of the city's lawlessness. He fails to see the shades of grey in which Kaelen operates.
Personal History
Kaelen's life has been defined by the shadows. The thieves' guild, "The Gilded Serpents," was the only family he ever knew. They taught him everything: how to move unseen, how to read people, and how to kill. The guild's master, a man named Corvus, was a father figure, but his betrayal and the subsequent purge of the guild by Imperial forces left Kaelen with deep scars and a burning need for answers.
The faded crest he keeps is his only link to a life before the guild. He has no memory of his parents, only a recurring dream of a woman with silver hair humming a lullaby.
